From Overwhelmed to Bright: How Outsourcing a Simple Task Lifted My Mental Load

Ever since I became a mom, "mental load" has always been a phrase that is top of mind. It refers to the fact that not only are women typically doing the household chores, they are also spending a lot of time thinking about them. I always have a long running list in my head (and my Google Keep) that will never be entirely crossed off.

I logically know that whenever I'm able to take out a lot of these items, I feel better. My brain feels less cluttered. I feel lighter and satisfied that I've been "more productive". But I don’t think I fully realized what a big impact certain items had until I recently had some help replacing outdoor lightbulbs. I had replaced several of them myself, carefully steadying and climbing up the ladder to reach them, but there were 15+ that were just out of reach either due to my height, their location, or both. I would always shrug and tell myself that eventually I would figure it out.

Enter Jennafur. We had just started working together for Hire Possibilities Home and I asked her to help me with this project. She finished it at least three times as fast as I imagined she would, and when I saw every lightbulb shining as brightly as they once had been (there was probably always at least one or a few out for the past 3-4 years!), I felt a huge weight fall off of my shoulders. I realized that every time the lights turned on at night, I would chastise myself for not getting to that task, but tell myself I'd just do it later. A few weeks later, I am still so grateful for her help every time I turn the lights on! It feels ridiculous to say it out loud, but it really gives me a better sense of pride for my home.
