Why I Teach Interview Skills and Landlord Essentials at North Seattle College

Being a teacher has never been on my career bingo card, but last year, I started teaching two continuing education classes at North Seattle College.

Coming from a family with several teachers, I’ve always had utmost respect for them. They exude patience, care, understanding, empathy, strength, I could go on and on. I’ve always thought of teaching in the stereotypical sense: working with energetic elementary school students, middle schoolers amid difficult transitions, or high schoolers who are ready for their next step. I didn’t think I had the patience, energy, skill, or drive to go down this path. (and I still don’t when it comes to kiddos – so grateful for all the educators and educator family members who shape my daughter’s experience!)

Why teach continuing education classes then? (besides the appealing fact that these classes are for adults) My values and mission. Empowering job seekers and landlords with the information they need to take control of their future is important to me. Not everyone needs or can afford 1:1 interview coaching. And not every landlord wants to hand over their property to a management company. Sometimes people need practical tools, a place to ask questions, and a dash of confidence building.
